Character History: Backstory and the plot-relevant Season two episodes part 1 2 3 4
In season 1, Wander and Sylvia come across Bingleborp, a planet of cute happy aliens that is conquered by the upcoming conqueror Lord Hater. Wander attempts to befriend Lord Hater in order to teach him the error of his ways, but as knock-off Skeletor doesn't want to do love and kindness, Wander finds another method to get him off the planet while playing into Hater's competitive streak: a challenge to a series of carnival games. He dominates Hater at each competition, which leads to him losing his cool, which makes him easier to trick and defeat. From then on, Wander and Sylvia were declared Lord Hater's most hated enemies.
In season 1, Wander and Sylvia have episodic adventures on different planets, sometimes running into Lord Hater, and having lessons in friendship and being kind. They also continue having these adventures in Season 2, mixed in with adventures seeking ways to stop Lord Dominator. The planets they visit include a tennis ball populated by flea aliens, a sentient yandere planet, a planet ruled by a queen possessed by an ancient evil spirit etc.
Character Personality:
If there's one trait that dominates Wander's personality, it's his positive attitude. He believes that there's a good person in everyone if they're shown enough love or if he befriends them. He's very kind hearted and is easily swayed by cute things and displays of helplessness. It's too easy to get his sympathy. He gets into speeches about how things are going to be great and to believe in themselves (and him) when things are looking down. And he can be annoyingly so! He tends to forget things like "personal boundaries", he insists that people want friends no matter how many times they deny, he's going to make them realize that they shouldn't hurt others no matter how long it takes. However, those more annoying tendencies come about when he interacts with villains like Lord Hater. With people that are already friendly, he's just an eager, talkative guy willing to help out with anything asked of him. He can't say "no" to a request.
And if he says no? He feels guilty. He'll stress about his inability to do things. If his helping leads to failure, he's going to be sad, but he doesn't give up hope and sees it as an important moment. But if he believes he's doing poorly in his helping it's another problem. Wander has anxiety issues, whether it comes from perceived failure or obsessing over a minor thing (ex. his curiosity vs. orders not to open the box he's delivering). When he was sent to the convenience store to buy Sylvia her favorite soda while she waited out in the hot weather, he got a panic attack when it was sold out and he couldn't find a good replacement. He pulls out his fur hair by hair when he gets really jittery. Thankfully, he's found ways to manage it, but he still could use outside help to calm him down.
There aren't many concrete details about his past, other than he used to go by the name "Tumbleweed" before meeting Sylvia as a bounty hunter and managing to befriend her. However, this shows that he is pretty good at reaching out to people and calming them down as she is his best friend during the show. There's a strong hint that the biggest reason why he's so empathetic and desires to help others is because when he was younger, he felt helpless and he doesn't want other people to feel like he did.
He's a friendly alien, unashamed of his more embarrassing moments. He unabashedly loves cute animals, arts and crafts, and being the embarrassing friend that will do a goofy dance in public just because he can. He knows what it's like to be alone and upset, and he wants to reach out to others despite having seen a lot during his travels and knowing there is some bad stuff out there. The creator has stated that Wander is strong for deciding to be a good person, and it's tough. He knows it's tough to believe in good things at times, and the pressure nearly cracks through at times, but he holds onto this philosophy steadfastly.
Abilities: Does being an all-loving optimist count? It does for Wander, since he fights against his misgivings to give people a chance. But let's talk about concrete abilities.
Wander is a fantastic singer and banjo player, repeatedly breaking into song in the canon and even weaponing it to combat a talking clown banana voiced by Al Yankovic by turning his music into...beams? Usually it's just sweet banjo shredding and not magical weapons.
If Wander could get in a physical fight...he'll lose. He's strong enough for a cartoon to carry things twice his size, but overall he's kind of weak. His strength more lies in running around like the road runner and avoiding getting hurt. He's small enough to crawl around in tiny spaces.
His hat has magical properties, and he can store anything and pull out anything from it, though the hat has a mind of its own (?) and has a rule that it will only give when the user needs, not wants. And it only really listens to Wander. This will have to be nerfed considerable, but I would still like Wander to use it as an extra pocket and not have a bunch of paper clips and paper fall on his head while wearing it.
He's skilled in arts and crafts, including working with fabric, and he's shown to be a pretty good cook in "The Breakfast", where he even bakes bread starting from the wheat harvesting. Also, he's vegetarian so he knows how to make good meals without meat.
In "The Little Guy", it's shown that Wander knows the Heimlich maneuver and basic CPR.
Motives: Wander...does not like violence. He actively seeks to diffuse situations with THE POWER OF LOVE and wants people to be better, even if it means he gets hurt. He's not stupid - though he is too trusting at times - but he truly believes that everything will be okay if everyone gets along. He's going to be an anxious mess when friends continue to die each week, and he may start questioning if his philosophy really does work after all. In short, in a few week's he'll be all:
However, I am totally down for his attempts to "help" people out only make things worse and set up a murder. If things need a push/someone to ruin plans, Wander can be the guy.
He's also susceptible to suggestions when he's sleepwalking, and actually fought off some Watchdogs in his sleep when influenced by Sylvia's voice telling him to teach ballet. It's weird.
Regains:
Banjo - An instrument that will lift your spirits with the power of love!
Pretty Outfit - A frilly pink dress, a wide brimmed hat, and a fan are necessities to being a refined lady!
Wander's Phone - A smartphone that has thousands of images of beautiful alien landscapes, selfies, and cute cat photos.
Friendship Necklaces - A pair of pendants in matching halves of a heart. One has "BE BU" written on it while the other says "ST DS".
A box - Your run-of-the-mill white square shoebox. There's absolutely nothing inside it.
Would you be like your character to have a plot-intensive role?: I would be interested! Wander wouldn't do anything he knows is bad, but he will try to get close to the showrunner and attempt to befriend him through conversation.
Would you like to volunteer to have your character be involved in a case?: I'll leave it to RNG
Do you have any other notes/concerns for your character that you'd like to mention here?:
